A Brief Survey of Society Wikis

The subject of “unofficial” wikis came up obliquely in comments by the Society President at the October 2024 quarterly Board meeting, as well as in subsequent discussion online, and I thought it might be useful to survey which kingdoms had established wikis.

Of the 20 kingdoms, 9 have official wikis, 3 have unofficial ones, and 8 don’t appear to have a wiki at all.

Kingdoms With Official Wikis

Kingdoms With “Unofficial” Wikis

  • Caid Wiki. Started in 2008.
    • There is a link to it from the header of the main SCA-Caid.org website.
    • Home page states “not an official website”.
    • Features the kingdom name and arms throughout the site.
    • Reportedly, there was an incident in which (following a 2007 R&D) Direk Ivanovich demanded that mentions of his name be removed from Society publications. According to the lore, the kingdom agreed, but the editors of the Caid Wiki refused to censor their site; when the Society attempted to exercise control over the wiki, the editors dug in and organized themselves as a separate 501(c)3 and have maintained their independence ever since.
  • Calontir Wiki. Started in 2018.
    • No obvious links from the recognized kingdom site to the wiki.
    • Home page says “not an official document” and the site logo on every page says “unofficial.”
    • Features the kingdom name and arms throughout the site.
  • Aethelmearc Wiki. Started in 2023.
    • No obvious links from the recognized kingdom site to the wiki.
    • Home page says “unofficial” and the site logo on every page says “unofficial.”
    • Features the kingdom name and arms throughout the site.

Kingdoms Without A Known Wiki

  • West
  • Meridies
  • Trimaris
  • Outlands
  • Drachenwald
  • Artemisia
  • Northshield — but note that the kingdom website does allow people to create persona pages containing custom text about themselves, one of the key uses of many kingdom wikis.
  • Gleann Abhann

Non-Kingdom Wikis

In addition to the kingdom wikis, there are also some smaller Society-run wikis maintained by individual offices and third-party wikis maintained by members of the populace. The below examples are not an exhaustive list:

  • The Morsulus Herald maintains a small wiki with details about how their office works
  • A member of the College of Arms maintains an unofficial heraldry wiki summarizing various precedents and useful sources.
  • The Society Marshal is working to republish all of the Society’s martial handbooks as part of an interconnected wiki editable only by senior marshals.
